Forest Elementary

Summary:

Forest Elementary is a public elementary school located in Crystal, Minnesota, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 453. The school is part of the Robbinsdale Public School District, which is ranked 330 out of 463 districts in Minnesota and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Forest Elementary has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (30.68%) and Hispanic (15.23%) students compared to the state average. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by MCA-III test scores, is generally below the state and district averages across all grades and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 27.81% of Forest Elementary students were proficient or better in Math, compared to 45.47% statewide and 26.22% in the Robbinsdale district. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Minnesota elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years, lower than the nearby schools like Lakeview Elementary and Sonnesyn Elementary.

Forest Elementary's performance on MCA-III tests varies significantly by student subgroup. African American and Hispanic students at Forest Elementary generally perform better than their peers at the school, but still lag behind state averages for those subgroups. In contrast, the school's White and Special Education students perform significantly worse than state averages for those subgroups. Additionally, Forest Elementary has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 56.07% to 72.63% over the past few years, higher than the nearby schools. Despite these challenges, the data suggests that there may be opportunities for improvement, as the relatively stronger performance of African American and Hispanic students at Forest Elementary indicates that the school may have strategies or resources that could be leveraged to support other underperforming subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Let me start by saying there are a few EXCEPTIONAL teachers at the school. However, my families experience with the school discipline policies is RIDICULOUS! My son got hit in the face 5 times. His glasses are now crooked and he has a bruise on his nose and by the eyes. I spoke with the teacher who saw the incident and was told my child did nothing wrong, but that a kid wanted to budge him and the lunch line and my child said no. As a result the child attacked my child. I was told the child said sorry and received no consequence. When I talk to Mrs. Jackson, the principal. She said we do not do consequences here, we do restorative practices. I asked her how the child was going to learn to not hit, or how my child would know that what was done to him would was not okay, and that there are consequences for our actions. She replied with, well kids do not learn anything by being suspended. ERR... This is not the first time something like this has happened to my child or friends of mine in this school. Something needs to change! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
