Richfield Stem School

Summary:

Richfield Stem School is a public elementary school in Richfield, Minnesota that serves students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has consistently struggled academically, ranking in the bottom 25% of Minnesota elementary schools over the past decade.

Richfield Stem School faces significant challenges, particularly for its minority and disadvantaged student populations. The school's proficiency rates on state assessments are well below state averages, and it performs poorly compared to other public schools in the Richfield Public School District as well as nearby Seven Hills Preparatory Academy charter schools. For example, Seven Hills - Bloomington Elementary and Seven Hills - Richfield Elementary both outperform Richfield Stem School on key metrics. The school's racial achievement gaps are also a significant concern, with its African American and Hispanic students ranking in the bottom 25% of Minnesota elementary schools.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Richfield Stem School has struggled to make meaningful progress in student outcomes over the past decade. The school's consistently low statewide ranking and test scores suggest the need for substantial interventions and improvements to better support the academic success of its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote When touring Richfield schools, STEM's office staff and the principal were very warm and welcoming. This left me with the impression their manner would set the tone for classrooms and it does! My daughter is much happier at STEM. The lessons are interactive rather than instructional -- much better fit for my kids. Class sizes are much more reasonable (20 to 25 kids per) and the teachers are top notch. All staff seems to have more freedom to be innovative in their teaching style and genuinely enjoy the kids and their jobs.
The fun, warm atmosphere also seems to lend well to learning. Our kindergartener is already reading on his own and was not at all when he started. Our 4th grader is learning to code. Very cool! Close Quote

Open Quote To clarify for people that don't know much about this school, it has only been a K-5 STEM school since 2010. Prior to that, it was a 3-5 Intermediate school, so I don't think the statistics should combine as much as they do. As you can see if you dig a little more, there have been some GREAT gains since the 2010-11 year and I think that is a credit to the awesome Principal and staff that have chosen to operate in a STEM environment.

The statistics aren't great, I get that, but there is so much you can't measure that makes this a truly excellent school. They play different genres of music throughout the halls (jazz, classical, etc) each week for the students. They focus all of their focused help in reading at the youngest levels so that kids have a strong start and can more easily continue their reading in the later grades. The STEM focus is scary for some kids that still want their kids to get art/music/phy ed/etc, but I promise it doesn't take away anything, they only ADD a scientific understanding to the arts and athletic programs that has been useful and great for kids to know. This is a phenomenal school and I recommend it to anyone even remotely close to the district. Don't let the stats fool you, I think STEM will continue to make huge gains and establish itself as an excellent option for MN K-5 education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
