Webster Elementary

Summary:

Webster Elementary is a public elementary school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, serving 267 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school has a diverse student population but faces significant academic challenges, with low proficiency rates and poor rankings compared to state and district averages.

Webster Elementary's student body is more racially diverse than nearby schools, with 41.2% African American, 29.59% White, 8.61% Hispanic, 4.87% Asian, and 3.75% Native American students. However, the school's academic performance is concerning, with only 18.03% of students proficient or better in Math and 23.14% in Reading, far below the state and Minneapolis Public School District averages. The school's performance is particularly low for certain subgroups, such as 3rd and 5th-grade students, as well as African American, English Language Learner, and low-income students.

Webster Elementary's academic struggles are not unique, as nearby schools in the Minneapolis Public School District also face similar challenges. Schools like Pillsbury Elementary and Hall Academy Elementary have comparable low proficiency rates and rankings. The high percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients at Webster Elementary (68.54%) suggests that socioeconomic factors may be contributing to the school's academic performance, which has been declining over the past few years.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter attended fourth grade at this school and loved it. She said everyone was always nice to her and made her feel at home. We had a birthday party for my daughter and nearly the whole class showed up. It seems that the school is creating a very good community. She really loved her teachers (Joe and Rob) too. As a parent, I liked the family-style lunch dining were students sit a round table with an adult. Close Quote

Open Quote We love this school! The principal, Ginger, is a positive and thoughtful leader for the school who takes care in knowing each student. All of the staff is great and our daughter enjoys her time there. We feel so lucky to be a part of such a positive, diverse school community in the Northeast Mpls neighborhood. Close Quote

Open Quote After a difficult year dealing with a messy 504 plan and consistent bullying issues at another school, we made the decision to hold our daughter back a grade. It was the absolute best decision transferring my daughter to Webster! Teachers are thoughtful, curriculum is inclusive, progressive and my child absorbs it so well! We LOVE that the class sizes are smaller. Lunch is 30 minutes & recess is 30 minutes, giving kids time to engage and socialize without being rushed. Really wish the school went up to 6th grade, but we are appreciative of the year we have left. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
