Whittier Elementary

Summary:

Whittier Elementary is a public elementary school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, serving 361 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school has a unique demographic profile, with a significantly higher percentage of African American (52.35%) and Hispanic (25.48%) students compared to nearby schools, and an exceptionally high rate of students (87.81%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Whittier Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 20% of Minnesota elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates in Math, Reading, and Science are significantly lower than the Minneapolis Public School District and state averages, particularly for African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Low Socioeconomic Status students. This suggests that Whittier Elementary may be facing unique challenges in addressing the specific needs of its student population.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Bancroft Elementary, Ella Baker Elementary, and Kenwood Elementary, generally perform better academically and have more diverse student populations, indicating that Whittier Elementary may require targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Don't let the test scores fool you -- this school has a lot to offer! Excellent teaching staff, a great curriculum (IB for the Primary Years) and engaged parents make this a wonderful learning community. It's also got a socio-demographic mix of kids, parents and staff that reflects the population of our city and our world.
School also offers Spanish as a world language -- most Mpls K-5 schools do not offer any world language. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
