Lewiston-Altura Secondary

Summary:

Lewiston-Altura Secondary is a public high school serving grades 6-12 in Lewiston, Minnesota, with a student population of 346 and part of the St. Charles Public School District.

Lewiston-Altura Secondary has a predominantly white student population, with strong graduation rates but lower-than-average test scores, particularly in math and science. The school has seen an increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, and its performance on standardized tests varies significantly by student subgroup, with female students outperforming male students. Compared to nearby schools like Rushford-Peterson Senior High and St. Charles Secondary, Lewiston-Altura Secondary generally performs worse on standardized tests, suggesting the school may need to focus on improving its academic performance and addressing the needs of its diverse student population.

Over the past few years, Lewiston-Altura Secondary's statewide ranking has declined, from a high of 196 out of 472 Minnesota high schools in 2021-2022 to 246 out of 480 in 2023-2024. This suggests the school may be struggling to keep pace with other high schools in the state, and it may need to provide more support for students from low-income families as the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch has increased.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the worse school you can send your child to. The Superintendent there does not know how to run a school there has been a lot of students who have left there due to the way she treats the students and parents. Your child will not get the help they need at this school and if there special ed she will try and force you to have your student go to another school. She was paid to leave a school in the best interest of the students and this school hired her now our students are being mistreated. Close Quote

Open Quote Lewiston High School has a ton of issues between staff and parents. The principal does NOT support parents & families, and there is a big problem with communication overall. This school does not provide a safe learning environment, as bullying is ignored and overlooked. The students often complain about the ease of coursework and the reputation of the school has suffered. Beware of this school, you will not find support for your family here! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
