Hayfield Secondary

Summary:

Hayfield Secondary is a public high school serving grades 6-12 in the small town of Hayfield, Minnesota. With a student population of 363, the school has a predominantly White student body (around 88-89%) and a moderate percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch (22-36%).

Hayfield Secondary has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking, ranging from a high of 134 out of 494 Minnesota high schools (4-star rating) in 2017-2018 to a low of 362 out of 480 (1-star rating) in the most recent 2023-2024 school year. Its current 2-star rating places it below average compared to other Minnesota high schools. While the school has relatively strong graduation rates (86.9% to 94.8%) and low dropout rates (generally under 2%), its test scores on the MCA-III assessments in math, reading, and science tend to lag behind state averages by 10-20 percentage points.

Compared to nearby schools, Byron Senior High School and Kasson-Mantorville Senior High outperform Hayfield Secondary in terms of statewide ranking, test scores, and graduation rates, while Austin Senior High, Smec Alternative Learning Center, and Zumbro Area Learning Center lag behind. Hayfield Secondary's performance also varies by student subgroup, with female students and White students outperforming their low socioeconomic status peers, suggesting potential achievement gaps that the school may need to address.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I switched my daughter from Kasson to Hayfield schools and her math and reading skills significantly improved because of the dedicated involvement of the teachers and programs available. Further, there has been less bullying and harassment within the school from both students and teachers. Kasson is a very competitive, sport-focused school where Hayfield focuses on its academics. The main reason the test scores are much lower than Kasson is because of the higher number of non-native English speaking children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
