Academic Arts High School

Summary:

Academic Arts High School is a public charter high school located in West Saint Paul, Minnesota, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 104. Despite its diverse student body, the school consistently underperforms academically, ranking in the bottom quartile of Minnesota high schools and receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school's key challenges include low academic performance, with proficiency rates on state assessments significantly below the state averages, as well as poor graduation rates ranging from 32.1% to 51.8% over the past five years, and high dropout rates reaching up to 21.8%. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a large proportion of students from low-income families. When compared to nearby schools, such as Open World Learning Secondary, South St. Paul High School, Humboldt High School, and Two Rivers High School, Academic Arts High School significantly underperforms in academic outcomes.

The school's small size, high percentage of low-income students, and location in a relatively low-performing Saint Paul Public Schools district may contribute to the challenges it faces in improving academic outcomes. Additionally, the school's focus on the "academic arts" may not be adequately preparing students for traditional academic success, as evidenced by the school's poor performance on standardized tests. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive approach, including targeted interventions, resource allocation, and a focus on improving the overall educational experience for the school's diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Academic Arts High School offers a great school culture for students who have not flourished in other academic settings. In addition to an accepting and safe community, AAHS has incredible mental health support available to students. Their small student body has access to both a school social worker and a school psychologist. This level of accessibility to these services is nearly impossible to find. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
