Cologne Academy

Summary:

Cologne Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 658 students in grades K-8 in Cologne, Minnesota, a community ranked 2nd out of 463 districts in the state with a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger. This high-performing school has consistently ranked among the top 25-70 elementary schools in Minnesota over the past five years, demonstrating impressive academic excellence.

Cologne Academy's strong academic performance is evident across all grade levels and subject areas. In 2023-2024, the school's proficiency rates exceeded the state averages by a significant margin, with 80.92% in Math, 77.05% in Reading, and 71.97% in Science, compared to the state averages of 45.47%, 49.85%, and 39.56%, respectively. The school's diverse student population, with 74.16% White, 12.92% Asian, and smaller percentages of other racial groups, is another notable feature. Additionally, Cologne Academy has a relatively low percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 7.12% to 17.78% over the past three school years, significantly lower than the nearby Eastern Carver County Public School and Central Public School District schools.

While Cologne Academy's performance is exceptional, the nearby public schools in the region also demonstrate strong academic results. Several schools in the Eastern Carver County Public School and Central Public School District, such as Victoria Elementary and Central Elementary, rank in the top 200-400 elementary schools in Minnesota. However, Cologne Academy's performance consistently exceeds these nearby schools across most grade levels and subject areas, making it a standout educational institution in the region.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote For the most part, Cologne Academy is a good school. I've been pretty happy with the staff and their special ed system is very good. I've had a few reservations on the teachers "please communicate" plea. Some of them seem to appreciate communication and others don't respond to your emails at all. This has happened with at least half of the teachers that I have worked with over the past 3 years. I've had some questions and concerns in the past that could have been worked out if the teachers had taken the time to reply. I do understand they're incredibly busy and that they get a ton of emails--but then they keep assuring us that we need to keep up the communication, don't be afraid to email them, ect. It makes no sense. They get their half of the deal by sounding like a dedicated teacher while the parent sits on the sidelines feeling like a schmuck and never knowing what is going on with their child. So yes, Cologne Academy is a good school but they need to work on how they want to communicate with parents and quit sounding like a politician that says things just to make them look good. If email is too much then they need to look in other ways to communicate. Parents are the first teachers and non-paid at that--we derserve a little more respect. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
