Twin Cities German Immersion Charter

Summary:

Twin Cities German Immersion Charter is a public charter elementary school in Saint Paul, Minnesota, serving 615 students from kindergarten through 8th grade with a strong focus on German language immersion.

The school consistently outperforms the state average in both math and reading proficiency, with 68.48% of students proficient or better in reading and 50.27% in math, compared to state averages of 49.85% and 45.47% respectively. Its performance is particularly strong in higher grade levels, with 7th grade reading proficiency reaching 86.15% and 8th grade science proficiency at 52.83%. However, the school's student population is predominantly white at 84.39%, in contrast to the more diverse nearby schools like Como Park Elementary and Great River Elementary School. Additionally, only 10.08% of Twin Cities German Immersion Charter students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly lower than the 42.33% to 95.99% range of nearby schools, suggesting the school may not be serving a representative cross-section of the local community.

The school's relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12.4 students per teacher may contribute to its academic success, though some nearby schools like The Journey School have even lower ratios of 8.5 students per teacher. Overall, Twin Cities German Immersion Charter stands out as a high-performing school with a strong focus on German language immersion, but its demographic and socioeconomic profile raises questions about equity and accessibility that the school and the broader Saint Paul Public Schools community may need to address.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The German Immersion School is run like a German POW Camp. It is a strict Dictatorship run by one single man controlling all student and faculty decisions. Close Quote

Open Quote TCGIS recently demolished an important neighborhood landmark. They ignored the advice of The St. Paul Historic Preservation Committee, The State Historic Preservation Office and The National Register of Historic Places. The demolition project has created a great divide between TCGIS and the surrounding community. TCGIS has caused irreparable harm to the cultural and architectural heritage of the Como Warrendale neighborhood. Close Quote

Open Quote A horrible school that puts the needs of the Board and Director above all else. Students are irrelevant even though the school sells itself as better than regular schools. Parents are not allowed in the building (what are they hiding?) and if you have an issue, you are blown off. I am removing my son from this awful place. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
