First, SWWC Alternative Learning Center - Windom consistently ranks among the lowest-performing high schools in Minnesota, receiving 0 out of 5 SchoolDigger stars. Its students perform significantly below state and regional averages in proficiency on standardized tests, with only 7.69% of students proficient in reading in 2023-2024, compared to 49.85% statewide. The school also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, reaching 87.1% in 2022-2023, much higher than the 38.24% to 66.67% range at nearby schools like Windom Senior High and Jackson County Central Senior High.

Additionally, SWWC Alternative Learning Center - Windom faces challenges with student retention and graduation. The school's four-year graduation rate has fluctuated, ranging from a low of 35.2% in 2016-2017 to a high of 76.4% in 2017-2018, and its dropout rate reached 25.0% in 2020-2021 - much worse than the nearby schools, which have graduation rates above 90% and dropout rates below 6%. These factors suggest that the school may be struggling to provide a high-quality education and keep students engaged and on track to graduate, likely due to the unique needs of its alternative learning environment and student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote People give this school a bad rap. I have had 2 children going here because they did not fit into the regular school setting they both have excelled here. One has graduated with excellent grades. My other child has excellent grades also and graduates in 2020. I am taking care of another child who goes here and is excelling also. I am very happy with this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
