Oriole Park Elementary School

Summary:

Oriole Park Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 289 students in grades PK-4 in Wyoming, Michigan, which is part of the Wyoming Public Schools district.

Oriole Park has a diverse student population, with 41.87% White, 33.91% Hispanic, 12.11% two or more races, and 9.69% African American students. However, the school faces significant challenges, including high rates of chronic absenteeism (21.5%) and consistently lower academic performance compared to the district and state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 16% of 3rd-grade students were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 24.8% for the district and 39.6% for the state. Additionally, 83.39% of Oriole Park students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

While Oriole Park shares some similarities with nearby schools, such as high percentages of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, it generally underperforms its peers in academic achievement and has higher chronic absenteeism rates. For instance, Vanguard Charter Academy, a nearby public charter school, consistently outperforms Oriole Park and the district on state assessments. Despite increased spending per student, from $13,091 in 2020-2021 to $19,205 in 2022-2023, Oriole Park's academic outcomes have not improved, suggesting that addressing the school's challenges will be crucial for improving educational outcomes for its students.

Open Quote My son attended this school for one day. It was such a horrific experience that I transferred him to another district. My son has some special needs. I made sure to notify the school and speak to both his teacher and principle prior to his first day to confirm that the school could meet his needs. He has medical problems, which have delayed speech and potty training, and he has food allergies. When I picked up my son, he was soaked in his own urine- through both his pull-up and pants, and he was a hysterical mess. I have never seen him so upset. I made some calls. After dozens of different stories from the principal, various staff members, and superintendent, I finally got my hands on a written report, which didn't match anything I had been told. Apparently, they refused to let my son out of his seat (to go to the bathroom), and at some point, he jumped up and yelled and grabbed at his pants (a small child cannot hold their bladder all day), at which point he was removed from the classroom for the rest of the day! Then an adult forced him to take off his pants and sit on the toilet, and they never changed him! I had been told to send extra pull-ups and pants, and that it wouldn't be a problem, accidents happen...Well, they never bothered to change him, even though the teacher (or another staff member) got into his book bag and removed his school supplies. Fortunately I checked his bag when he got home - they had intentionally put a free lunch in it, which contained several items that would have made my son very sick. Even if my child didn't have allergies, I wouldn't want them giving him sugary junk food all day. The "healthy" free meals and snacks include items like Pop Tarts and Chocolate Milk. The school also demanded a doctor's note to refuse these cavity inducing non-nutritional food products, even though I sent my son with plenty of snacks, since they wanted to feed him three times (during a half day). About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
