North Holland Elementary School

Summary:

North Holland Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 267 students in grades K-5 in the West Ottawa Public School District in Holland, Michigan. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority Hispanic enrollment (46.07%) and significant percentages of White (33.33%) and Asian (8.61%) students.

North Holland Elementary faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates (24.6% in 2022-2023), below-average academic performance on M-Step assessments compared to district and state averages, and a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds (60.3% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch). While the school's per-student spending is relatively high at $14,575, this increased funding does not appear to be translating into improved student outcomes. Interestingly, the school's performance data shows notable differences in academic achievement between racial subgroups and gender, with Hispanic students outperforming the district and state in 3rd grade English Language Arts, while female students ranked higher than male students in the state's elementary school rankings.

Comparing North Holland Elementary to nearby schools, it is evident that the school's performance lags behind many of its counterparts. Schools like New Groningen School and Quincy Elementary School in the Zeeland Public Schools district consistently outperform North Holland Elementary on academic measures, suggesting the need for targeted interventions and support to address the school's challenges and improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Terrible school I have no good things to say about this school. Not a lot of anything going on at this school. For such a small school there is no teacher parent communication. Teachers do not use classroom webpages. No before school programs or after school programs. Very unfriendly principal is not good at all. Very very few activities after school and for such a small school it feels very very unwelcoming for parents. Rude principal and staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
