Frank Jeannette Junior High School

Summary:

Frank Jeannette Junior High School is a public middle school serving grades 7-9 in Sterling Heights, Michigan, with a student population of 656 as of the 2022-2023 school year. While the school is part of the Utica Community Schools district, which is ranked 166 out of 610 districts in Michigan, Frank Jeannette Junior High School faces several key challenges that set it apart from its peers.

One notable difference is the school's racial makeup, with a higher percentage of White (70.27%) and Asian (10.06%) students compared to the surrounding schools. However, this diversity does not translate to academic success, as Frank Jeannette Junior High School's test scores are generally lower than the district and state averages. For example, the school's 7th-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 34.7%, compared to 46.9% for the Utica Community Schools district and 37.9% for the state of Michigan. Additionally, the school has a significantly higher chronic absenteeism rate of 32.2%, well above the range of 12.4% to 42.1% seen in nearby schools.

Socioeconomic factors also play a role, as Frank Jeannette Junior High School has a much higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (79.57%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 14.57% to 84.22%. This, combined with a higher student-teacher ratio of 18.2, suggests that the school faces significant challenges in supporting its student population. When compared to other middle schools in the Utica Community Schools district and the nearby Troy School District, Frank Jeannette Junior High School consistently underperforms, with schools like Eppler Junior High, Heritage Junior High, and the Troy district schools outperforming it across various metrics.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I attended this school for two years. The teachers are great, but the students had no passion whatsoever towards their education. The class fails to get to concepts because other students are causing distractions and complaining towards learning. Not a school to attend if you want to be in a learning environment. I switched out to The International Academy of Troy, and everything about that school is amazing and unique! Close Quote

Open Quote Very bad school with undisciplined students. Counselors are lazy and do not know how to fix my child's schedule. Very unorganized school. Also very racist and biased towards culture. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
