Potterville Middle School

Summary:

Potterville Middle School is a public magnet middle school serving around 200 students in grades 5-8 in Potterville, Michigan, which is part of the Potterville Public Schools district. While the school has a higher percentage of white students compared to the state average, its academic performance has been mixed, with declining statewide rankings and varying school ratings over the years.

Potterville Middle School's test scores are generally lower than the state and district averages, particularly in 6th and 7th grade English Language Arts and Math across all grades. The school also faces challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 15.2% to 40% in recent years, which is significantly higher than the state average and nearby schools like Kenneth T Beagle Middle School and Leon W Hayes Intermediate School. Additionally, Potterville Middle School has a relatively high percentage of students (55.5%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds compared to nearby schools.

While Potterville Middle School's performance has fluctuated, with its statewide ranking ranging from 250 to 632 out of Michigan middle schools and its SchoolDigger rating varying between 2 and 4 stars, the school's overall academic performance lags behind several high-performing nearby schools. Addressing the challenges of racial disparities, chronic absenteeism, and socioeconomic factors could be crucial for Potterville Middle School to improve and better serve its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The problem with this district are the kids that attend it. These kids are a product of their homelife and if you’ve been to any event, you can understand what I mean. Many of these parents simply don’t care and it shows. For a school with only 60 kids per grade, the bullying and teasing is in full force. Even when parents get called and discipline enforced, it doesn’t stop it. A few weeks later, it starts back up again. It is a vicious never ending circle. Staff, though, seems to take things seriously unlike other districts. Nathan Leale is a well-loved but enforceful principal. I hope he stays. I haven’t seen many longevity teachers and I can completely see why. No. I would run for the hills and look at other options for schooling. Unfortunately, many districts in backwoods Eaton County are going to be the same. Grand Ledge draws Lansing students. I’d go east to Okemos or north to DeWitt. Otherwise, homeschool. 1 star because I can’t go lower for the school...another star for staff. ZERO for the kids that attend as THIS is where their issues are...the families. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
