Port Huron Northern High School

Summary:

Port Huron Northern High School is a public high school serving 1,169 students in grades 9-12 in Port Huron, Michigan, which is part of the Port Huron Area School District. The school stands out for its relatively homogeneous student population, with a significantly higher percentage of white students (84.35%) compared to nearby schools like Port Huron High School and Croswell-Lexington High School, which have more diverse student bodies.

Port Huron Northern has consistently maintained a high 4-year graduation rate, ranging from 90.1% to 92.8% over the past 5 years, outperforming the district and state averages. However, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 19.6% in 2019-2020 to 43% in 2021-2022, which is much higher than the state average. While Port Huron Northern students outperform the district average on standardized tests, their performance lags behind the state average in several subject areas, including Math and Science.

The school has seen a steady increase in per-student spending, from $10,739 in 2019-2020 to $14,118 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the district average. This suggests that the Port Huron Area School District is investing more resources into the school, though it will be important to monitor how these additional funds are being utilized to improve student outcomes and address the recent increase in chronic absenteeism.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I gave Northern an above avg ranking simply because it is. State test results back this position. They have adequate choices for AP courses. In fact...I can say...having had 2 children go through Northern, assuming your child takes advantage of higher level courses. they should not be limited on their college choices. It is not uncommon to hear of kids going to Northwestern, Harvard, Michigan and other tier one academic colleges. Overall teachers are above avg, of course there's one or two exceptions. Finally...in my opinion...I find it odd when i hear of parents deciding to "school of choice" to local districts. Northern ACT scores are slightly higher than avg as are local districts. Sorry...but we do not have Cranbrook or Birmingham Public School level options....which would merit a school of choice decision. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
