Parcells Middle School

Summary:

Parcells Middle School is a public middle school located in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, serving grades 5-8 with a student population of 677. The school is part of the Grosse Pointe Public Schools district, which is ranked 40th out of 610 districts in Michigan and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Parcells Middle School stands out for its diverse student population, with 31.31% African American, 3.84% Hispanic, and 5.61% two or more races, which is higher than the surrounding schools. The school consistently ranks in the top 25% of Michigan middle schools, with a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger, and its performance on state assessments is generally higher than the state averages, particularly in English Language Arts. However, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 20.2% in 2017-2018 to 39.6% in 2021-2022, which is an area of concern.

Compared to nearby schools in the Roseville Community Schools and Detroit Public Schools districts, Parcells' academic performance is generally higher. However, the school lags behind the high-performing Pierce Middle School and Brownell Middle School within the Grosse Pointe Public Schools district. Parcells' higher spending per student and lower student-teacher ratio may contribute to its academic success, but addressing the chronic absenteeism issue will be crucial for the school to maintain its high ranking and continue providing a quality education for its diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son was in another School District and was not getting a good education. The faculty and staff did not make much effort to help him with school academics/social skills so he would flourish in that setting. He was barely passing with D's He is bi-polar/ADHD and has had nothing but a rough road from 2nd grade on in the East Detroit Public School System, not to mention a few others. At Parcells the Faculty & Staff worked with us(son & I) and my son at the end of the school year had all B's and an A with the exception of Math. For my son this is a huge accomplishment. I am so glad that I put my children in the Grosse Pointe School System. They have wonderful Faculty & Staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
