Lewton School

Summary:

Lewton School is an elementary school in Lansing, Michigan, serving 215 students in grades PK-8, with a predominantly Hispanic student population and a high percentage of students from low-income families. The school faces significant challenges, including high chronic absenteeism, low academic performance, and a bottom-quartile statewide ranking.

Lewton School's chronic absenteeism rates are consistently higher than the state and surrounding school averages, ranging from 40.8% to 56.5% in recent years. Academically, the school's M-Step and PSAT test scores are consistently lower than state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 22.7% of 3rd-grade students at Lewton School were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 39.6% statewide and 18% in the Lansing Public School District. Despite these challenges, the school has shown some strengths in specific racial subgroups, with African American and Hispanic students ranking higher than the state average in certain years.

Interestingly, Lewton School's per-student spending has increased over the years, reaching $18,393 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the spending at some nearby schools, such as Windemere Park Charter Academy ($11,482) and Cole Academy ($9,190). However, these nearby schools, while also serving predominantly low-income and minority student populations, generally outperform Lewton School on academic measures, suggesting that targeted interventions and support could potentially help improve student outcomes at Lewton School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to school from Kindergarten to sixth grade and back the food stunk and tasted like garbage however the school activities were very enjoyable and most of the staff members were kind and cared about every single student there and the after school activities were enjoyable, fun, and taught us multiple things we would never have learned about in regular classes they also were able to help out students who were falling behind in classes so overall it was an enjoyable experience to go to this school and I hope many others enjoy it as much as I did. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
