Wexford Montessori Magnet School

Summary:

Wexford Montessori Magnet School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Lansing Public School District in Michigan, with a student population of 327. Despite its Montessori approach, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Michigan elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

One of the school's key challenges is its very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 33.2% in 2019-2020 to a staggering 92.5% in 2021-2022, significantly higher than the state average and surrounding schools in the Lansing district. Additionally, the school's academic performance, as measured by proficiency rates on state assessments, is consistently below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 16.1% of 3rd graders at Wexford Montessori Magnet School were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 39.6% statewide and 18% in the Lansing district. The school also has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 86.54% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023.

When compared to other elementary schools in the Lansing district, Wexford Montessori Magnet School consistently underperforms. For instance, Cavanaugh School, which is located within the same district, has significantly higher proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Math for 3rd grade students. While the school's Montessori approach may offer unique opportunities, the data suggests that Wexford Montessori Magnet School will need to implement comprehensive, evidence-based strategies to address its significant challenges and improve outcomes for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Just another terrible Lansing School District school. Math and reading scores far below the state average. Send your kids to a charter school, Holt School of Choice, or anyplace besides Lansing School District. Close Quote

Open Quote Public Montessori is a great option! While Lansing schools aren't well rated, Wexford provides opportunities not available in our native school district so we drive kids to school 25 minutes away to have a multi-age Montessori program including 2 weeks of zoo and nature field trips and the district's overnight camping program the kids have done every year since Kindergarten. We love Montessori so kids can work at their own pace inspired by conceptual learning in a way that traditional education doesn't include naturally. This is a great option for advanced kids to work ahead without skipping a grade and those who need more help without being left behind. It's like an IEP for every student! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
