Holland Heights has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (44.49%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 16.62% to 55.35% Hispanic students. The school has also experienced a steady increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 13.1% in 2020-2021 to 29.8% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the surrounding schools. Academically, Holland Heights' performance, as measured by M-Step proficiency rates, is generally lower than the Holland City School District and the state of Michigan averages across various grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 31.3%, compared to the district's 35.3% and the state's 39.6%. Additionally, Holland Heights has a high percentage of students (83.26%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds compared to the surrounding schools.

While Holland Heights faces some unique challenges, the school has shown some strengths in supporting specific student subgroups. For instance, in 2021-2022, the school's Hispanic students ranked 21 out of 86 Michigan elementary schools in English Language Arts proficiency, earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. Additionally, the school's low-socioeconomic status students have also performed relatively well, ranking in the top half of Michigan elementary schools in recent years. However, when compared to nearby schools, such as the Zeeland Public Schools district, which includes Lincoln Elementary, Woodbridge Elementary, and Roosevelt Elementary, Holland Heights consistently underperforms on academic measures, despite serving a similar demographic of students. Additionally, the Holland Language Academy at Van Raalte, a public magnet school, has generally outperformed Holland Heights on academic measures, suggesting that the magnet school model may be more effective in supporting student achievement.

Open Quote We absolutely love the staff at Holland Heights! Each day, the principal is outside welcoming kids with a high-five as they come to school. He is genuinely excited to see kids walk into the building, knows them by name, and cares about each and every one. This trickles down to the teachers as well - they are caring! We are so thankful we chose our nieghborhood school to develop relational roots where we live! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
