Southwest MiddleHigh Academia Bilingue

Summary:

Southwest MiddleHigh Academia Bilingue is a public high school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, serving 330 students in grades 7-12, with a predominantly Hispanic student population of 90.3%. The school faces significant challenges, including consistently lower test scores, high chronic absenteeism, and a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

Compared to other nearby schools in the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, Southwest MiddleHigh Academia Bilingue generally performs worse on key metrics such as test scores, graduation rates, and chronic absenteeism. For example, Grand Rapids University Preparatory Academy and Grand Rapids Montessori MiddleHigh have significantly higher test scores and graduation rates than Southwest MiddleHigh Academia Bilingue. The school's performance on various subgroups, such as female students, male students, Hispanic students, and low socioeconomic status students, is also consistently lower than the state averages for those subgroups.

Despite the high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, the school's spending per student is relatively high, ranging from $14,150 in 2020-2021 to $15,378 in 2022-2023. This raises questions about the effective allocation and utilization of resources to support student learning and achievement. As a school with a "Bilingue" designation, it would be interesting to explore the school's approach to bilingual education and how it may be impacting student outcomes, particularly for its predominantly Hispanic student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is a joke. They can't even hire enough teachers to work here. My daughter said in 3 of her classes they literally do nothing the entire hour. Substitute teachers are there just babysitting disruptive, troubled kids. Do not send your kids here. I'm currently trying to get her into a legit school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
