As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote City Middle/High School is an excellent school. This school challenges my son. After going to what was consider a "good" school in MI and finding that the teachers were not interested in challenging my son or taking the time to get him into programs that would let him excel, I looked for another school. City does all of that. The classes are challenging for the gifted student. The teachers will work with your child after school to help them reach their potential. This school goes the extra mile. Other districts will just do what they have to do and that's it. Teachers are accountable for their students success. Which makes a huge difference. Close Quote

Open Quote City has been working to become an International Baccalaureate Program (ibo.org) for approximately five years and is currently scheduled to receive certification for the Middle Years Program this spring (2010). City is also working for certification in the IB Diploma Program with the graduating class of 2014 expected to be the first to receive IB Certified Diplomas.

City has also been working closely with the Wege Foundation to integrate Peter Wege’s principals of Economicology into our educational programming. Peter Wege’s Five Pillars, or areas of interest: Education. Environment. Arts & Culture. Health Care. Human Services closely match the mission of City High/Middle and we are very grateful to the Wege Foundation to their support of City High/Middle and the effort to become an International Baccalaureate school. This combination of Economicology and IB is creating a hybrid model of education that builds upon City’s tradition of excellence and is being closely watched by the IB community as a model program.

City is an exceptional school which attracts students into GRPS, drawing students from three counties and multiple school districts. City’s student population is diverse racially, economically and religiously. This diversity is very representative of the Grand Rapids community. Within this diversity, there exists a family unity among the students, staff and parents that holds the City community together.

Academically, City is the top performing school in the area based on MME rankings with a combined score of 196.1 out of a possible 200 (2009). This score is 27 points ahead of the next best score in the area and second best in the state of Michigan.

I would invite you to look further at City High/Middle to see the great things that are happening at this exceptional school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
