Kent Hills Elementary

Summary:

Kent Hills Elementary is a public elementary school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, serving 189 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school faces significant challenges, including a high-needs student population, low academic performance, and extremely high chronic absenteeism rates.

Kent Hills Elementary has a notably higher percentage of African American (53.97%) and Hispanic (22.75%) students compared to nearby schools and the state average. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Michigan elementary schools, with academic performance on state assessments significantly below district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. Chronic absenteeism rates at Kent Hills Elementary are also extremely high, ranging from 37.9% to 65.8% over the past five years, much higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, around 90% of the school's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage.

While Kent Hills Elementary struggles academically, some nearby schools within the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, such as Congress Elementary and North Park Montessori Academy, perform significantly better on state assessments and have higher statewide rankings. The high per-student spending at Kent Hills Elementary ($18,026 in 2022-2023) suggests a commitment to supporting the students, but the academic outcomes remain poor, indicating that a more comprehensive approach may be needed to address the complex challenges facing the school and its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My daughter has been a student here at Kent Hills Elementary since kindergarten, she is now in fifth grade.Over the years I've watched the school decline.I've seen some good teachers get let go.The conditions of the playground are disgusting which always seems to be littered with trash&bags of dog poop. There is no math tutors for children in fifth grade. The school has gone down hill since Mr.Rodgers, their principal took over.I would never recommend Kent Hills Elementary School to anyone. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
