Griffin Elementary School

Summary:

Griffin Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Grand Haven, Michigan, serving grades PK-4 with a student population of 335. The school is part of the Grand Haven Area Public Schools district, which is ranked 153 out of 610 districts in Michigan and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Griffin Elementary has some strengths, such as higher academic performance compared to the state average and investment in resources, the school also faces challenges. It has a significantly higher percentage of White students (83.28%) compared to the state, and its proficiency rates in M-Step English Language Arts and Math for 3rd and 4th grades are lower than the district averages. Additionally, Griffin Elementary has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, from 6.4% in 2018-2019 to 41.0% in 2022-2023, which is much higher than the state average. The school's performance for female students, male students, and White students is also lower than the state averages for those subgroups, indicating potential achievement gaps.

Interestingly, Griffin Elementary's academic performance is generally lower than the nearby high-performing schools, such as Rosy Mound School and Jeffers Elementary School, which are both ranked in the top 5% of Michigan elementary schools. Despite Griffin Elementary's higher spending per student and lower student-teacher ratio compared to the state averages, the academic performance does not yet reflect the higher investment, suggesting that addressing the school's challenges, such as chronic absenteeism, may be crucial for improving its overall performance and providing a high-quality education for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote We moved here last year from Ireland. The staff at Griffin could not have been more helpful. They were amazing! From making sure all the kids in his class could pronounce my son's tricky name, to double checking he was at the right level, and even helping us out to know what resources were available in the community. I feel very lucky both my kids are now at Griffin. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
