Shumate Middle School

Summary:

Shumate Middle School is a public middle school located in Rockwood, Michigan, serving 795 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Trenton Public Schools district, which is ranked 255 out of 610 districts in Michigan and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Shumate Middle School has a higher percentage of White students (77.86%) compared to the surrounding schools, it faces several challenges. The school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 17.2% in 2017-2018 to 29.6% in 2022-2023. Additionally, Shumate's proficiency rates in M-Step and PSAT assessments are generally lower than the state and district averages, particularly in mathematics. For example, in 2023-2024, only 24.8% of 6th-grade students and 23.5% of 7th-grade students were proficient or better in M-Step Math, compared to the state averages of 31% and 32.1%, respectively.

Shumate Middle School's performance is generally lower than nearby schools, such as Wagar Junior High School, Grosse Ile Middle School, and Boyd W. Arthurs Middle School, which have higher proficiency rates, lower chronic absenteeism, and better overall rankings from SchoolDigger. Despite a significant increase in per-student spending, from $9,968 in 2019-2020 to $13,326 in 2022-2023, Shumate's academic outcomes have not improved, and the school's student-teacher ratio has increased from 18.3 in 2020-2021 to 20.6 in 2022-2023, which may be contributing to the school's challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My sons experience at shumate middle school in Gibraltar has not been a great one. He has been an open spectacle to the teachers and students in his class. My child has experienced being racially attacked, bullied, harassed, broken down, and targeted by staff and faculty at the school because of our rights and voices. The school has profiled and stereotyped my child and has set every barrier possible in his way since his return to in person school at shumate. My child is now having anxiety issues and dreads going to these particular classes in fear of what will happen next. After waiting for things to smooth over and consequences to take place nothing has happened not even from the board. I was asked by the superintendent what did I want her to do as if she wasn’t aware of the traumatic situation my son encountered. Everything that has happened to him goes against school policies and even our rights. All matters will be handled accordingly. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
