Orchard View Elementary School

Summary:

Orchard View Elementary School is a public elementary school in Grand Rapids, Michigan, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Forest Hills Public Schools district, which is ranked 15th out of 610 districts in the state.

Orchard View Elementary consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in Michigan, with exceptional academic performance across all student subgroups. The school's students excel on state assessments, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies that significantly outpace state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 64.9% of 3rd graders, 64.8% of 4th graders, and 71.7% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 39.6%, 43.3%, and 44%, respectively. Orchard View also stands out for its strong support of students with special needs and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, ranking 2nd and 14th in Michigan for these student groups, respectively.

While Orchard View Elementary has a diverse student population, its academic performance is strong across all racial subgroups, suggesting the school effectively supports the learning and growth of students from various backgrounds. However, the school has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, from 5.2% in 2017-2018 to 14% in the last two school years, which may impact future academic success if not addressed. Compared to nearby schools in the Grand Rapids Public Schools district, such as East Leonard Elementary, North Park Montessori Academy, and Palmer School, Orchard View's academic performance is significantly higher, though more comparable to the nearby Knapp Forest Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The most nurturing and welcoming elementary school my children have ever been a part of. The teachers, staff, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, custodians, secretaries, lunch ladies all care for kids and do their best to make sure every child gets what he or she needs. Happy students, friendly teachers, great communication between school and home, lots of opportunities to volunteer in the classroom and get involved with the PTO. Just the best!! Close Quote

Open Quote Have had 4 kids go through Orchard View Elementary School since 1999. Unfortunately we are pleased and lucky our last child will go into 7th grade this year (2016). This school has deteriorated severely over the last 5 years. The teachers are not engaged anymore and don't address any issues or bullying. It is very unfortunate how much this school has declined. Please look heavily into Knapp Forest or NorthPointe Christian before taking the plunge into Orchard View. So sorry for this review but it truly is depressing when you look at the teachers and leadership at Orchard View and their lack of mentoring or caring about these young lives.. Many kids are transferring out and with good reason. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
