Stout Middle School

Summary:

Stout Middle School is a public middle school in Dearborn, Michigan, serving around 790 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Dearborn City School District, which is ranked 302 out of 610 school districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Stout Middle School faces several challenges, including a significantly higher percentage of White students (89.75%) compared to surrounding schools, a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism (from 14.7% in 2017-2018 to 35.2% in 2022-2023), and generally lower academic performance than district and state averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 6th-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 32.5%, compared to the district's 35.8% and the state's 37.5%. However, the school's performance for certain student subgroups, such as African American students and students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, is relatively strong compared to the state average.

When compared to other middle schools in the Dearborn area, Stout Middle School generally performs worse academically, with lower proficiency rates in core subjects. However, it outperforms some nearby schools, such as Salina Intermediate 4 8 and Woodworth Middle School, which have even lower academic achievement. Despite these challenges, Stout Middle School has seen a steady increase in its per-student spending, rising from $12,476 in 2019-2020 to $18,115 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the district and state averages.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I was surprised to see the lower ratings for Stout Middle School. My daughter is an 8th grader at Stout Middle School. For the past 3 years, she has had mostly dedicated and highly skilled teachers. It is amazing to see them discuss the students and their learning strengths and needs in such a caring and skillful manner. The principal and staff are extremely responsive to problem solving with parents and students. The building is clean and very attractive inside, including art displays done by the students. The only drawback is all the cuts made by the City of Dearborn. Also, it is hard for working parents let their children participate in many of the activities due to no transportation home if they are not enrolled in riding the bus. There is a multi-cultural population at Stout and the staff have been able to create a mutually peaceful and respectful atmosphere. And I feel this is a very positive experience for my daughter. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
