Lansing Charter Academy

Summary:

Lansing Charter Academy is a public charter elementary school serving 451 students in grades K-8 in Lansing, Michigan. The school has a diverse student population, with 49.67% African American, 22.17% Hispanic, and 13.53% two or more races.

While Lansing Charter Academy spends more per student than the state average, the school faces significant challenges. It has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 20.7% to 51.7%, which is much higher than nearby schools. The school's test scores on the M-Step and PSAT assessments are also significantly lower than state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates ranging from 13.7% to 27.5% in English Language Arts and 11.3% to 26.5% in Math, compared to state averages of 37.5% to 44% in ELA and 31% to 43.4% in Math. Performance also varies greatly by student subgroup, with African American and Hispanic students generally performing better than the school's overall averages, while White, English Language Learner, and Special Education students perform worse.

When compared to nearby public schools in the Lansing Public School District, Lansing Charter Academy generally performs worse on academic measures, despite having higher per-student spending. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the charter school model in this context. Additionally, the school's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past several years, from 1112 out of 1533 Michigan elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 1253 out of 1486 in 2023-2024, a concerning trend that suggests the need for significant improvements at the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Not a good school if you child has ADHD. Principal and staff all refused to do 504/IEP evaluation on my child despite having a well-documented medical diagnosis and history of medication/treatment, not to mention its the LAW. Instead of helping my child, the school only decided to discipline my child repeatedly for behaviors attributed to ADHD and anxiety. They would not even allow my child to see the school social worker, but the student file shows a "history" of behavior issues. They set my child up to fail and didn't want to be bothered with help or assistance to get my student on a successful path. They did nothing to help my child. My child was also continually bullied because of having ADHD and all the discipline my child received. But they have a "Zero Tolerance" policy for bullying?? What a crock! After attending this school, my child completely hated going to school. Finally pulled my child out of this school and moved to another....my child is doing MUCH better, at a school that actually cares and responds with requests for 504/IEP and help with ADHD. I would caution ALL parents about sending their children to this school. Charter Schools are not all they claim to be...at least not this one. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
