Marshall Academy

Summary:

Marshall Academy is an alternative public charter school located in Marshall, Michigan, serving grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 272 students. The school has a diverse student population, with 62.5% White, 27.57% African American, 6.62% Hispanic, 1.1% Asian, and 2.21% two or more races.

One of Marshall Academy's key strengths is its significant improvement in graduation rates, which have increased from a low of 12.5% in 2018-2019 to an impressive 100% in 2022-2023. This remarkable turnaround is a testament to the school's efforts to support student success and retention. However, the school continues to face challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, which are higher than the state average. When compared to nearby schools, such as Gull Lake Virtual Partnership and Tekonsha Schools, Marshall Academy's test scores are generally lower, particularly in core subject areas like English Language Arts and Math.

Marshall Academy's diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students compared to nearby schools, can be a strength. However, the school may need to ensure that its curriculum, teaching practices, and support services are culturally responsive and inclusive. Additionally, the high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 53.88% in 2020-2021 to 63.6% in 2022-2023, indicates that the school serves a significant population of students from low-income families. This may require the school to allocate additional resources and support services to address the unique needs of these students and ensure their academic and social-emotional success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Both of our children attended from Grade 2 - 12. We loved it - it became a family. They are both very successful in college and were awarded several scholarships. Because it is small you can participate in athletics, clubs, drama, and the high academics. Makes for a very well rounded student and creates an ideal scholarship candidate. You get very individualized highly qualified teaching: gifted students have opportunities to shine - there were students that wrote plays, directed plays, conducted the band, wrote novels, and art competitions; and students that need more academic attention or smaller class sizes receive that. Athletics, drama. chorus, band, and clubs are available. Students that would normally not be athletic enough to be on a team can have that experience and participate in athletics. It is a great school and we highly recommend it. Close Quote

Open Quote Our son started Marshall Academy last year in higher elementary. We chose this school for many reasons - small class size, academics, music, art - but the best reason is the people! Not just the staff, but the students as well. His class accepted him with open arms! Our son has aspergers (a form of autism) and we were a bit nervous about starting out with new kids and hoped he would not get bullied. We are EXTREMELY happy with his classmates - everyone treats everyone with respect. Marshall Academy is a great choice. Close Quote

Open Quote The Academy is a great place to work! The staff works well together and we have a common goal - student success. I also really appreciate the amount of parent involvement I receive and the respect the students show to me as a teacher. I love it here! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
