Universal Academy

Summary:

Universal Academy is a public charter school located in Detroit, Michigan that serves around 700 students from kindergarten through 12th grade. While the school has some strengths, such as high graduation rates and low dropout rates, it faces significant challenges in terms of student academic performance.

One of the key differentiators of Universal Academy is its relatively high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 87.5% to 96.4% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than nearby schools like Vista Meadows Academy (51.8%) and Downriver Digital Academy (55.5%). However, the school has also experienced an increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 7.0% in 2017-2018 to 14.9% in 2022-2023, which is still lower than some nearby schools like Joy Preparatory Academy (34.1%) and Vista Meadows Academy (35.7%), but a concerning trend nonetheless.

One of the most significant challenges facing Universal Academy is its low test scores on the M-Step and SAT/PSAT assessments, which are significantly lower than the state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, only 9.43% of 3rd graders, 11.5% of 5th graders, and 5.26% of 7th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state averages of 39.6%, 44%, and 37.9%, respectively. This is in contrast to the school's predominantly white student population, which differs from the more diverse student bodies of nearby schools like Joy Preparatory Academy and Academy of The Americas High School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
