Dimensions Academy

Summary:

Dimensions Academy is a public charter elementary school located in Cornville, Maine, serving grades K-8 with a total enrollment of 161 students. The school is part of the Community Regional Charter School District, which is ranked 175 out of 177 districts in Maine and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Dimensions Academy stands out from nearby public schools in several key ways. The school has a significantly higher percentage of white students (94.41%) compared to the state average and nearby schools, with lower representation of minority students. Academically, Dimensions Academy performs below the state average, with only 46.05% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 36.71% in Mathematics, compared to state averages of 64.63% and 48.68%, respectively. The school also has a high chronic absenteeism rate of 28.2%, significantly higher than the state average and nearby public schools. Additionally, Dimensions Academy has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at 61.49%, higher than the rates of nearby public schools like Canaan Elementary School and Athens Community School.

The analysis of Dimensions Academy's data suggests that the school may be serving a population with greater socioeconomic challenges and educational needs, which could be contributing to its underperformance compared to nearby high-achieving public schools. The school's declining statewide ranking, from 206 out of 256 Maine elementary schools in 2016-2017 to 277 out of 290 in 2022-2023, further highlights the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique challenges facing Dimensions Academy and its students.

Open Quote CRCS sounds great on paper and Travis really sells the school to parents. Unfortunately nothing is backed up and in reality a lot of the learners fall well below grade level. There are few "real" classes and most of the day is filled with electives. There are not classes like science, history, geography, or hand writing. The days are longer than in public school to give more time outside, but if the days were shorter learners could go home and play so there is no point. There is also a high turnover rate for employees partially due to the long days and also due to the lack of support from Susan and Travis. There are numerous learners who should have a 1-1 with them due to behaviors, but the school doesn't want to pay for that so the teachers are left handling them while trying to deal with the rest of their class. Ed tech 1's aren't supposed to be left alone with even one child, but at CRCS they frequently wind up teaching entire classes all by themselves. Ed techs teach a lot of the electives, which is what the majority of a learners day is spent in. Do yourself a favor and send your child to anywhere other than this school. It's a great school in theory, but in reality it needs a complete overhaul. There are some amazing teachers there but without support they can only do so much. But hey, at least the school was able to spend a lot of money buying 6 cricut machines and even more 3d printers, because those are the things that matter in an education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
