Monmouth Academy

Summary:

Monmouth Academy is a public high school serving 191 students in grades 9-12 in the town of Monmouth, Maine. The school is part of the Regional School Unit 02 district, which is ranked 104 out of 177 districts in the state.

Monmouth Academy stands out for its strong academic performance, consistently ranking among the top 50 high schools in Maine and earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's students excel in English Language Arts and Science, performing above the state average, though they lag slightly behind in Mathematics. However, Monmouth Academy faces challenges with higher-than-average chronic absenteeism rates and a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 13.83% in 2020-2021 to 28.8% in 2022-2023. Compared to nearby schools like Hall-Dale Middle and High School, Monmouth Academy performs well, but it falls behind the higher-performing Maine Arts Academy School in terms of test scores and statewide ranking.

Another interesting finding is the gender gap at Monmouth Academy, with female students outperforming their male counterparts. In the 2018-2019 school year, the school's female students ranked 26th out of 92 Maine high schools, while the male students ranked 69th. Additionally, Monmouth Academy's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, with a high of 23rd out of 111 Maine high schools in 2016-2017 and a low of 58th out of 82 schools in 2020-2021, which may be a concern and warrant further investigation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a former student I can safely say it’s a comeplete joke of school, the faculty doesn’t care about the students education and well being. For me they only gave my 3 out of the 10 classes I should of had freshman year and said, “ that’s because you have a large class and can’t fit you in Cause the other classes are full. They will full on ruin your child’s/ yourself educated and won’t care about it plus their summer school is only 4 days long. I do not recommend this school to anyone. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
