Tilghman Elementary

Summary:

Tilghman Elementary is a small public elementary school in Tilghman, MD, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 94 students. Despite its small size, this school stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, outpacing both the Talbot County Public Schools district and the state of Maryland in both Mathematics and English Language Arts proficiency.

One notable aspect of Tilghman Elementary is its racial makeup, with a significantly higher percentage of white students (91.49%) compared to the more diverse student populations at nearby schools. However, the school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 38.3% to 58.51% over the past few years, indicating a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students. Despite this, Tilghman Elementary spends significantly more per student ($19,581 in 2020-2021) and maintains a low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.2 to 11.6 over the past few years, which could contribute to its academic success.

When compared to other schools in the area, such as Traceys Elementary, Sunderland Elementary, and White Marsh Elementary, Tilghman Elementary's strong performance in test scores and academic rankings stands out, even within the Talbot County Public Schools district. This suggests that the school is employing effective teaching strategies and resource allocation that could be worth exploring and potentially replicating in other schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is like a private school. Small teacher to student ratio, all the kids grow up with each other, and an outstanding afterschool program! Close Quote

Open Quote Tilghman Elementary School packs big school resources in a small package. The school has excellent and dedicated teaching staff augmented by strong community volunteer program that assists in areas such as tutoring, music and art. The teacher to student ratio is excellent so the strengths and weaknesses of each child are well known and the test scores, which are well above state average, reflect it. A real gem in the public school system. Close Quote

Open Quote Having went to school at Tilghman Elementary and now having children to go to the same school I get to see all aspects of the school. This is a very caring school for both student and parent. They work hard on a one on one basis with your child. It gives you the feeling of a small private school vs a large public school. Its a great school to start your children. There are several families from out of the country that have decided to stay just so their child can attend this school. The staff have been there for years and know each child and family on a personal level. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
