Legends Public Charter School faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education for its students. The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (over 89%) compared to the surrounding schools, which have more diverse racial compositions. Academically, Legends Public Charter School consistently underperforms the state and district averages in both mathematics and English language arts proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's overall mathematics proficiency was 7.8%, compared to 10.8% for the district and 24.1% for the state. Additionally, Legends Public Charter School has a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with over 50% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools.

When comparing Legends Public Charter School to nearby schools, the contrast in educational outcomes is stark. Schools like Robert Goddard Montessori and Seabrook Elementary demonstrate significantly higher academic performance, particularly in mathematics and English language arts proficiency. This suggests that the challenges faced by Legends Public Charter School, such as its high student-teacher ratio and the socioeconomic status of its student population, may be contributing factors to its underperformance. Addressing these issues could be crucial in improving the educational experiences and outcomes for the students at Legends Public Charter School.

Open Quote Legends IS NOT the place for your child, especially children with disabilities. The whole SPED dept. is unprofessional, they do not communicate with the parents about goals and strategies to help your student based on their 504/IEP. They’re disrespectful and aggressive to the students. They don’t return your calls. I’ve seen kids rolling, laying on the floor, while SPED instructors are sitting at their desks. There is even paper on the window covering almost 2/3 of it. They even have hired dedicated aides who smell like weed.

There is a high turnover rate of teachers, along with students every year. There are staff placed in the role of teachers with little to no teaching experience. Staff members are aggressive and yelling at students in the hallways & during fire drills. Parents are frustrated because of lack of schools communication for class/homework thru ParentSquare. Yet will send multiple messages about holidays and events they’re focused on. Some teachers don’t have accounts on ParentSquare to communicate to the parents.

For parents, they tell you what you want to hear, but don’t practice what they preach. They don’t listen to the parents who make suggestions to help improve the school. They’re happy with the confusion and chaos they’ve created. Overall, if they can get your donations, it makes them happy.

Again, this IS NOT the school for your child, disabled or non disabled. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has too many unqualified teachers are teaching students because they cannot keep teachers. Multiple teachers are leaving in the middle of the school year. They have a huge bullying issue and sometimes children aren’t disciplined for the disrespectful antics. This school has too many students and not enough staff members each core teacher (reading, math, etc) deals with approx. 100 students. There are only 25 slots for parent teacher conferences each quarter. It seems like most of the employees don’t genuinely care about the children and there are no graduations. The CEO and his son are arrogant and insolent. This school has some good ideas but poor implementation. There are so many things I can say. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has a lot of work to do to build to a capacity to truly educate our students. Unqualified staff that are called teachers, poor communication, no use of technology or text materials, just xerox copies of books/excerpts of text, tons of behaviors management concerns and student fights, sub par curriculum, insufficient support for students receiving special education services, and high staff turnover. I do mot recommend this school to anyone. They need more time to get things together. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
