Kettering Middle

Summary:

Kettering Middle is a public magnet middle school located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 915. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kettering Middle faces several key challenges, including a predominantly African American student population (78.69%), lower-than-average academic performance on MCAP tests compared to the state and district, and a high proportion of students from low-income families (49.57% to 60.98% receive free or reduced-price lunch). The school's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is generally lower than nearby schools like Benjamin Tasker Middle and Kenmoor Middle, which have higher percentages of students proficient or better in both Mathematics and English Language Arts.

Despite Kettering Middle's relatively high spending per student, ranging from $14,719 to $15,382 over the past three school years, the school's academic performance remains below the state and district averages. This suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as instructional practices, school leadership, and student support services, may be contributing to the school's challenges. Kettering Middle's consistently low ranking and rating, as well as the variability in subgroup performance, indicate that targeted interventions and support may be necessary to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote TERRIBLE, MY DAUGHTER QUIT BECAUSE OF THIS SCHOOL! Close Quote

by a parent
Saturday, November 25, 2017

Open Quote This school is one of the worst I've ever encountered with. The teachers are not involved. They call home for the most unreasonable things. They threaten to suspend children for things very small but never get in contact with the parents before.
My daughter has changed drastically over the 3 years she's attended this school. I refuse for her to continue here. The negative to this school is also the surroundings that it has. Largo is not the best of areas to raise a young teenager. We are moving this year. If they would have a better administration then the kids there would probably come out a lot different. Open Quote I have become very involved with my granddaughter's progress at this school. I am not impressed at all. I have made myself known to all of her teachers, yet not one has contacted me about her progress or issues that I discovered after the fact. In my monitoring of her grades, I see Kettering MS teachers seem to be more interested in just passing kids along from grade to grade. In order to report success they eliminate a students poor grades to raise the averages. i discovered this when I asked why my granddaughter had so many N/As and Exempts instead of scores for certain assignments. Yet I was told she was doing well. When I have visited the school, I've observed a lot of drama between teachers and parents, and students and teachers. The staff In the office have not achieved the level of professionalism I would expect from those dealing with the public. If you value education and there are any alternatives, do not send your child to this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
