William W. Hall Academy

Summary:

William W. Hall Academy is an elementary school located in Capitol Heights, Maryland, serving grades PK-8 with a student population of 496. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

William W. Hall Academy faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance compared to the district and state averages. The school has a much higher percentage of African American (52.62%) and Hispanic (45.77%) students than the surrounding schools, which tend to have a higher percentage of African American students. In the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 3rd-grade mathematics proficiency rate was just 11.3%, compared to 21.5% for Capitol Heights Elementary and 40% for the state. William W. Hall Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Maryland elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 65.43% to 82.86% over the past three school years, suggests a high concentration of students from low-income families. While the nearby schools also struggle with low academic performance, some, like Capitol Heights Elementary, have managed to achieve higher proficiency rates and better rankings, indicating that targeted interventions and support can make a difference. The persistent underperformance of William W. Hall Academy and other schools in the Prince George's County Public Schools district highlights the need for a comprehensive review of the district's policies, resource allocation, and support structures to address the root causes of these challenges and ensure equitable educational opportunities for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The staffing at this school is why this school is failing our children. They are ruining this school and not giving our children the proper education or resource's. Especially for our children with IEP's. They do not encourage parent involvement and if they allow you in the school they call security or have another member following you around even for a conference like you are an inmate. Their is no leadership. The principle is always out of the office. There concern is to cover each other's back and lie. My child has told me many of wrong doings and when I ask about this mistreatment they say it's not true. They discuss private information about IEP's. One of the secretaries were fired for money laundering. Students reported inappropriate actions they witness by two teachers who were put on leave and then able to return. A teacher hit student and was fired. I witness a teacher looking at school girls inappropriately. This same person said he only comes to get a check. One teacher has stated that he was a trashman and was hired and has no college credits. Two teachers told me there is lead in the water. The cafeteria has roaches my child said they all have seen them and one of them said that the kitchen lady smashed it in the food and scooped it out. This is just a little bit of what is going on in this school. The principle had it out for my disabled son that is in a wheelchair dedicated aid and told me that he went around collecting information from all my son's teachers and she is no longer with the school, but he wanted to insist on it had nothing to do with her working with my son. She is good with my child and she understood and help him understand his assignments that I would not even understand and sometimes could not help him. She would explain it to me break down the information and give me examples to help, because I was not getting any of this from the teachers. He doesn't even have a one on one. He is put in a normal class environment with no additional help only his work is modified. He has a specialist come in for math but he told me his job is not to give my son the extra help he needs he teaches the whole class and this he said what he was told to do. The class has a teacher and he is special needs so in other words you're not their to help him. With that being said he complained about his aid helping him keep up he can't even see the boards in the class and his seat is all the way in the back so he won't be in the way of the other children and can fit because the desk are so close together. Did I mention that this math specialist is also his case manager that I was not even aware of until two months after school. With him being that he has also stated to me that he has went around and spoken to my child's teacher and said that he needs to be treated like everyone else. Because of my complaints they have been doing things to make it more difficult for my son. They even tried to ban me from coming into the building when I made no threats, or touched anyone, nothing of any sort. I threatened to handle this with the school board then it became a misunderstandings with one of the school officials. Check the scores for this school this is a public school and it just started accepting special needs students and with there scores being so low for there general students. What kind of education do you think they are providing special needs student? Get more involved, ask questions, ask to see credentials, ask if you can be sit in on you're child's classes. This will not change unless we as parents become more involved, this school does not encourage this. They have so much that they are hiding and covering up. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
