G. James Gholson Middle

Summary:

G. James Gholson Middle is a public middle school located in Landover, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 867 students, and is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending, G. James Gholson Middle consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Maryland middle schools, with significantly below-average performance on state assessments. The student population is predominantly African American (64-71%) and Hispanic (27-34%), with a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch (48.27% to 90.89%), indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. In comparison, nearby schools like Hyattsville Middle and Nicholas Orem Middle have significantly higher academic performance and more diverse student populations.

The analysis of G. James Gholson Middle reveals several key challenges the school faces, including consistently low academic performance, a high concentration of socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and significant disparities in outcomes compared to nearby schools. These findings suggest the need for a comprehensive approach to address the underlying factors contributing to the school's struggles, such as targeted interventions, resource allocation, and community engagement, in order to improve educational opportunities and outcomes for the students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love gholson. Its awesome. Parents say the teachers are bad and so are the kids. That isnt true. Parents act like they actually sit their with their kids during school hours. NO! That isnt the case. They say their isnt enough disciplin for the kids. So not true. Until youve actually been their during school hours. DONT MAKE ANY COMMENTS! I hate parents who always think everything is bad. If your child has bad grades. ITS NOT THE SCHOOL ITS YOUR CHILD! If your child doesnt come home with homework you blame the school but did ever think to check their backpacks too see if their hiding homework? NO! you didnt! So until youve tried every idea possible DONT blame the school! -A former student at G.James.Gholson.Middle Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
