Riverdale Elementary

Summary:

Riverdale Elementary is a public elementary school in Riverdale, Maryland, serving around 630 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Riverdale Elementary has consistently been ranked in the bottom quarter of Maryland elementary schools, maintaining a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade. The school significantly underperforms the state and district averages in mathematics, English language arts, and science proficiency. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 7.8% of Riverdale students were proficient or better in mathematics, compared to 24.1% statewide and 10.8% in the district. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 83.94% to 95.87% over the past few years, which is likely a contributing factor to the low academic performance.

While the nearby schools, such as Beacon Heights Elementary and Hyattsville Elementary, also generally underperform the state averages, they tend to have significantly better academic outcomes than Riverdale Elementary. These schools also have lower percentages of students eligible for free/reduced lunch, suggesting a potential link between socioeconomic status and academic performance. Despite the relatively high per-student spending and small class sizes at Riverdale Elementary, the school's academic performance has remained consistently poor over the past decade, indicating the need for a comprehensive, data-driven approach to address the root causes of its underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My son came to Riverdale in 2015 and is now in the 3rd grade. I am very pleased with the personal attention he received last year in the 2nd grad as well as what he is receiving so far this year. The classes are very large, about 25 students last year and about the same this year. This makes it even more remarkable that the two teachers pay attention to each and every student. Thank you Riverdale! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
