Montpelier Elementary

Summary:

Montpelier Elementary is a public elementary school in Laurel, Maryland, serving 562 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Montpelier Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American (63.52%) and Hispanic (27.76%) students compared to nearby schools. The school's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is generally lower than the state and county averages across all grades and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 18.2% of Montpelier students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 24.1% statewide and 10.8% in the county. Montpelier's performance also varies significantly by student subgroup, with Hispanic and low-socioeconomic status students performing relatively well, but the school's rankings for female, male, and African American students are much lower.

Montpelier Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade. The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 56.77% to 77.76% over the past three school years, suggests that it may face additional challenges related to socioeconomic factors. While Montpelier's performance is generally lower than the state and county averages, some nearby schools, such as James H. Harrison Elementary and Vansville Elementary, have higher academic achievement in certain areas, providing potential insights for Montpelier's improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I would never recommend any parent to send your child to this school unless your child is white. The school nurse let my son sit in his urine for 2 hours before she decided to call me she sent my child back to class with wet clothes because she didn't see it as an emergency. When I found out I went to the school and I was very upset the vice principal just looked at me while I was telling her my concern. The next day I received a barred letter from the school principal Carla Furlow she said I was being disruptive to her office staff. She never once acknowledge my son being left in his urine. I also saw with my eyes the school nurse being very mean to a Hispanic girl when she was bleeding she acted as if the little girl had disease and she didn't want to touch her, at the same time a Caucasian boy was in the office throwing up and was very sice and the school nurse was rubbing his head and back telling him everything would be OK while Hispanic girl was still sitting there bleeding. This school is the worst school for children the principal is rude and she doesn't care about her students DO NOT NOT MAKE THE MISTAKE OF SENDING YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL.

Open Quote I made the mistake of sending my daughter here. Her teacher was not the issue, however the principal, assistant principal, and counselor are some of the rudest, unprofessional, and most vile women I have ever had the displeasure of interacting with. My daughter was being viciously bullied and because the bullies told lies about her, she ended up in trouble while the bullies suffered zero consequences. I might add that there was also racism directed at my mixed race daughter which saddened and disgusted me. The curriculum seemed lacking, as my daughter reported she had already learned the material the year before (We lived in a different state). After only a couple of months I pulled my daughter out of this joke of a school and am now homeschooling. Stay far away from this place! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
