Fort Washington Forest Elementary

Summary:

Fort Washington Forest Elementary is a public elementary school in Fort Washington, Maryland, serving 364 students in grades PK-6 as part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district.

While the school has a diverse student population with a higher percentage of African American and Hispanic students compared to the state average, it has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools over the past 10 years. Fort Washington Forest Elementary's academic performance on state assessments is below the state and district averages, particularly in mathematics. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. However, the school has maintained a relatively low student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as Rose Valley Elementary and Indian Queen Elementary, Fort Washington Forest Elementary generally performs below the average, with lower proficiency rates in both mathematics and English language arts. The school faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education to its diverse student population, with factors such as resource allocation, teacher quality, and school climate potentially contributing to its underperformance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote First, let me state that I am not a teacher or administrator of this school or any school. I am the parent of a 2nd grade student and I am proud that my son attends Fort Washington Forest. The primary issue with this school (as with many schools) is lack of parental involvement. Often, parents send their children to school and expect strangers to do what they refuse to do at home! Studies have shown that students who's parents are actively involved in the educational process excel above those students who's parents are not involved. If your child's test scores aren't high then first look to yourself as a parent and then look to the school . The administration is very customer focused from Ms. Brown in the front office to Mr. Bloyce the principal and all the teachers in between. If you plan to send your child to this school do so with the intent to make both the school and your child better by being involved. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
