Duval High

Summary:

Duval High is a public magnet high school located in Lanham, Maryland, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 2,503 students. The school is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Duval High has a significantly higher percentage of African American (51.06%) and Hispanic (41.39%) students compared to the surrounding schools, such as High Point High, Fairmont Heights High, and International High School @ Langley Park, which tend to have more diverse racial compositions. Academically, Duval High's performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is consistently lower than the state and county averages across various subjects and grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 6.5% of Duval High students were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 10.8% in the county and 24.1% statewide. Additionally, Duval High has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 54.13% to 74.47% over the past three school years, suggesting a higher proportion of students from low-income families.

Despite being a magnet school, Duval High does not appear to be outperforming the surrounding non-magnet high schools in the district, raising questions about the effectiveness of the magnet program and the school's ability to attract and retain high-performing students. Duval High's spending per student, ranging from $12,706 to $13,396 over the past three school years, is lower than the state average, which may contribute to the school's academic challenges and suggest a need for increased funding and resources to support student learning. The school's student-teacher ratio, ranging from 18 to 19.7 over the past three school years, is relatively high compared to the surrounding schools, which may impact the school's ability to provide personalized attention and support to its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Despite some of the negative rumors regarding Duval High, I am pleased with my son's progress and morale. The teachers are very responsive and dedicated, if you and your child are serious about getting an education the teachers will make sure your child gets the instruction he/she needs. I think the teachers can get overwhelmed by the class size in the beginning but once you meet with them and communicate with them regularly it seems that the issues seem to go away. That's just my experience. I believe that the curriculum could be a bit more challenging but I can't blame that on Duval that fault belongs to the school system.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
