Captain James E. Daly Elementary

Summary:

Captain James E. Daly Elementary is a public elementary school in Germantown, Maryland, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district. The school has a diverse student population, with a high percentage of students from low-income families, and consistently underperforms compared to other schools in the district and the state.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio and high per-student spending, Captain James E. Daly Elementary ranks in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with significantly lower academic performance on MCAP tests compared to the district and state averages. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as male students, African American students, Hispanic students, special education students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. For example, in the 2020-2021 school year, the school ranked 725 out of 788 Maryland elementary schools for male students and 371 out of 504 for African American students in MCAP Mathematics.

While Captain James E. Daly Elementary is part of the high-performing Montgomery County Public Schools district, it significantly underperforms compared to nearby elementary schools, such as Germantown Elementary, which is located just 2.72 miles away and outperforms Captain James E. Daly Elementary across all MCAP subject areas and grade levels. The data suggests that the school's high percentage of students from low-income families and diverse racial/ethnic composition may contribute to the lower academic performance, and targeted interventions and support could be crucial for improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Daly is a great school! My daughter went to Daly through 3rd grade and then went to the honors program at Fox Chapel. She is currently in high school at Clarksburg. I feel Daly prepared her well for middle school and high school. I believe that the most important aspect of a classroom is the teacher and I've been happy with the teachers every year. Some, maybe all, of her teachers had masters degrees and had taught for at least 10 years. The class sizes were always on the smaller side, even for Montgomery County. If you are an active and involved parent, your kids will get as much from Daly as any other school. I never felt like my kids were lost or ignored at Daly and the administration welcomed parent involvement and support. Close Quote

Open Quote Daly is an outstanding educational environment with highly dedicated teachers, incredible administrative leadership and students who work hard to overcome disadvantages beyond their control. Students receive excellent instruction as well as social emotional care from teachers and staff that go so far above and beyond what they are paid to do that this school deserves to be a model of excellence. Open Quote I can see how hard everyone works here and how much my daughter has been learning here since Kinder. Close Quote

Open Quote 1) Very little structure.
2) Many teachers think they are greater than they really are (or at least compared to other schools I have known).
3) The principle is slow to do anything unless she thinks it will get her in trouble. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
