Flower Hill Elementary

Summary:

Flower Hill Elementary is a public elementary school in Gaithersburg, Maryland, serving around 460 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which is ranked 7th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Flower Hill Elementary faces several challenges, including a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (53.91%) compared to surrounding schools, which range from 39.53% to 74.28% Hispanic. The school consistently underperforms the Montgomery County Public Schools and Maryland state averages in both Mathematics and English Language Arts proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Flower Hill's overall Mathematics proficiency was 17.1%, compared to 33.4% for Montgomery County and 24.1% for the state. Additionally, Flower Hill Elementary has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 61.9% to 69.13% over the past few years.

However, the school's relatively strong performance for certain subgroups, such as African American, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students, suggests that Flower Hill may be effectively supporting these traditionally underperforming populations. Furthermore, the school is located in close proximity (within 2 miles) to several other elementary schools, such as Strawberry Knoll Elementary and Mill Creek Towne Elementary, which consistently outperform Flower Hill on standardized tests and have higher SchoolDigger rankings. This proximity presents opportunities for Flower Hill to learn from and collaborate with these higher-performing schools to improve its own outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am reading the scores about Flower Hill Elementary School scores are not a good reflection of the school. I reside in the Flower Hill community and I had the opportunity to enroll my daughter in any school in MC. I selected this school because it is my neighborhood school I am so happy that we attend this school. My daughter is a second grader and I am blessed that she receives all of the necessary assignments required to progress to Grade Leve #3. The teachers in Flower Hill are aware of my daughter's strength and challenges and have made all attempts to assist her academically and emotionally. She is reading well and developing strong mathematic abilities. This is a great school with great resources but parents must invest in the academic journey of their children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
