A. Mario Loiederman Middle

Summary:

A. Mario Loiederman Middle is a public magnet middle school in Silver Spring, Maryland, serving 1,001 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which is ranked 7th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 4-star rating.

A key differentiating factor for A. Mario Loiederman Middle is its significantly higher Hispanic student population (66.43%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 16.97% to 52.96% Hispanic students. However, the school consistently underperforms the district and state averages on MCAP assessments, with proficiency rates in Mathematics (6.9%) and English Language Arts (36.8%) well below the Montgomery County Public Schools (33.4% and 55.3%) and Maryland state (24.1% and 48.4%) averages. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with Hispanic, Asian, and Special Education students performing poorly compared to their White and African American peers.

A. Mario Loiederman Middle has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 63.35% to 68.53% over the past three school years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools, such as Francis Scott Key Middle (28.09%) and Tilden Middle (80%). Despite the relatively high per-student spending of $15,704 in the 2020-2021 school year, the school's academic performance remains poor, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution to improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school provides good education, but phenomenal arts opportunities. The building is in dire need of a renovation as the school is very dirty and like many schools in MCPS, they have a roach/insect infestation. Close Quote

Open Quote I am a parent of an 8th grader at Loiederman, and our experience has been excellent. Our daughter attended our local school, our son is out of consortium at Loiederman. The difference between the two schools is in the teachers, as well as the arts program. The Loiederman teachers are inspired, unique, hard working and creative. That includes academic teachers as well as teachers in the arts. I can only speak to the choral program and the theater program, both are excellent. The choral ensembles consistently earn superior ratings at local, state and regional adjudications, and the flagship Chamber Choir recently performed at a national conference in Dallas, TX. Absolutely sign up for chorus if your child has even the slightest interest in singing - Mr. Guerra is well-loved by the kids and will help them achieve excellence. Other features include a Mac lab filled with digital keyboards, a digital arts lab with all current professional software including PhotoShop, and excellent dance and visual arts programs. Open Quote I attended this school for 3 years. I do not recommend it to anyone. It is a magnet school to integrate students from other areas to get better test scores. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
