Summary:

Somerset Elementary is a public elementary school in Chevy Chase, Maryland, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district. With a diverse student population, the school consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in Maryland, boasting exceptional academic performance and a relatively high per-student spending.

Somerset Elementary's students excel on state assessments, with significantly higher proficiency rates in Mathematics and English Language Arts compared to the county and state averages. In English Language Arts, 71.5% of Somerset students were proficient or better, compared to 55.3% in the county and 48.4% statewide. While the school's racial and socioeconomic diversity is higher than some nearby high-performing schools like Bannockburn Elementary and Bradley Hills Elementary, it still maintains a relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 20.71%.

The high academic performance and diverse student population of Somerset Elementary suggest that it is providing a quality educational experience for its students. However, the analysis also reveals that some nearby schools, such as Bradley Hills Elementary and Bannockburn Elementary, may be outperforming Somerset Elementary in certain areas, highlighting the need for continued improvement and innovation to maintain its position as a top-tier educational institution.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Blatant racist bullying by the staff — they have ways to push minority and other unwanted families into pulling their kids out. Look at the playground and see for yourself: count how many minority kids there are in the lower grades and then compare with the upper grades. Where did the minority kids go? It’s been like this for many, many years. Close Quote

Open Quote Some talented teachers but a persistent bullying problem. Children of Chevy Chase Club members pick on middle class and racial minority kids. Principal punishes those who report bullying. Over three years eight kids we know transferred out due to bullying. We left too. Close Quote

Open Quote The school is not as a level of the taxes that we have paid since we lived in Montgomery county. The teacher will never respond to my e-mail and she is not nice to my son. You can barely speak wit principle or the teacher of the class. Two of my sons classmate had lice and we never received any notification and my son level reading and writing is not good with this class.

They don't even have a graduation party to kindergarten. I never heard of that even in prince George county. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
