Dr. Sally K. Ride Elementary

Summary:

Dr. Sally K. Ride Elementary is a public elementary school in Germantown, Maryland, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district. The school has a diverse student population, with a higher percentage of Hispanic and African American students compared to nearby schools, but its academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages.

While the school's overall academic performance is lower, the performance of specific student subgroups, such as African American and Hispanic students, is relatively stronger compared to the school's overall performance. This suggests that the school may be able to leverage the strengths of these subgroups to improve the overall academic outcomes. However, the school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, coupled with its lower academic performance, indicates that the school may benefit from targeted interventions and support programs to address the needs of its student population, particularly those from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

When compared to the nearby schools, such as Stedwick Elementary, Lake Seneca Elementary, and Cedar Grove Elementary, Dr. Sally K. Ride Elementary's academic performance is generally lower, with lower MCAP test scores and lower statewide rankings. However, the nearby schools also have varying levels of diversity and socioeconomic factors, which may contribute to the differences in academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Although this school is located in a neighborhood of above average income single family homes, the extreme numbers of students who are bused from other locations skews the student population. Rather than integrating the student body to the advantage of all students, this is a disturbing disservice to the local students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
