Ducketts Lane Elementary

Summary:

Ducketts Lane Elementary is a public elementary school in Elkridge, Maryland, serving 617 students in grades PK-5. As part of the highly-ranked Howard County Public Schools district, Ducketts Lane has maintained a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating its performance is below average compared to other Maryland elementary schools.

Ducketts Lane stands out for its diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 14.26% White, 36.95% African American, 28.69% Hispanic, 12.97% Asian, and 6.48% two or more races. However, the school also has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 62.56%, much higher than the nearby schools. Academically, Ducketts Lane's performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is consistently lower than the Howard County district and Maryland state averages, with only 22% of students proficient or better in Mathematics.

Interestingly, Ducketts Lane's performance varies across different student subgroups, with Hispanic and low-socioeconomic status students performing relatively well, but Asian and male students performing poorly. Despite spending more per student ($18,275) than the nearby Worthington Elementary, Ilchester Elementary, and other local schools, Ducketts Lane's academic outcomes remain below average. To address these challenges, the school and district should consider targeted interventions, optimizing resource allocation, and collaborating with higher-performing nearby schools to identify and adopt best practices.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great school, great teachers and staff and I absolutely love the students. I had the opportunity of doing my field experience hours in a Kindergarten class and I enjoyed it, plus my mentor was amazing. Close Quote

Open Quote Great school. great teachers. However, I would have liked to see a full-time assistant teacher to help in my daughter's kindergarten class. The teacher seems overwhelmed, has much to do and prepare, so it would have helped to have an assistant do all that work so the teacher can focus on teaching. Also there are too many students in my daughter's classroom, approximately 20, and they all have varying learning abilities, so it seems challenging for the teacher and it makes me wonder if my daughter is receiving the right amount of education.

I would have liked to also see more focus on homework and math. There is no set homework, especially math.

But all in all I see that the school staff and teachers are extremely dedicated, energetic, young and fun and that makes the overall experience really good. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
