Harpers Choice Middle

Summary:

Harpers Choice Middle is a public middle school serving grades 6-8 in Columbia, Maryland, which is part of the highly-ranked Howard County Public Schools district. The school has a diverse student population, with nearly half of the students identifying as African American.

Academically, Harpers Choice Middle lags behind the district and state averages, particularly in Mathematics. Only 23.1% of students were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 41.1% in the Howard County district and 24.1% statewide. The school's performance is especially low in 7th and 8th grade Math, with just 9% and 10.5% proficiency, respectively. However, the school performs better in English Language Arts, with 40.5% of students proficient or better, compared to 63% in the district and 48.4% statewide. Harpers Choice Middle's academic ranking has fluctuated over the years, ranging from 128th out of 303 Maryland middle schools in 2020-2021 to 185th out of 322 in 2022-2023.

Interestingly, Harpers Choice Middle's academic performance is generally lower than that of other nearby middle schools in the Howard County district, such as Lime Kiln Middle and Clarksville Middle, which consistently outperform Harpers Choice Middle on MCAP tests. These higher-performing schools also have lower percentages of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting a potential correlation between socioeconomic status and academic achievement. The school's relatively high per-student spending and similar student-teacher ratio to nearby schools indicate that factors other than staffing levels may be contributing to its academic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Harper's Choice has a fabulous staff and administration, a strong after school program, a robotics team, drama club, and diverse band and strings program. I'm not sure how this website does its "rankings" but it has really missed the mark on this one. Great school! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
