Dunloggin Middle

Summary:

Dunloggin Middle is a highly-ranked public middle school in Ellicott City, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 and part of the acclaimed Howard County Public Schools district. With consistently strong academic performance, a diverse student population, and higher socioeconomic status compared to nearby schools, Dunloggin Middle stands out as a model of educational excellence in the region.

Dunloggin Middle consistently outperforms state and district averages on standardized tests, with 64.8% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 42.8% in mathematics, compared to 63% and 41.1% for the district, respectively. The school's diverse student body, with a mix of White, Asian, African American, and Hispanic students, is higher than many surrounding schools. Additionally, Dunloggin Middle has a lower percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch (25.93%) than nearby schools like Lake Elkhorn Middle (54.01%) and Harpers Choice Middle (50.3%), indicating a relatively higher socioeconomic status of its student population.

While Dunloggin Middle's overall performance is exceptional, the school's ranking for certain subgroups, such as African American students and students with special needs, is lower than its overall ranking, suggesting a need to focus on addressing the needs of these populations. Nonetheless, Dunloggin Middle's strong academic outcomes, diverse student body, and higher level of investment per student (compared to the state average) make it a standout choice for families in the Ellicott City area, with nearby schools like Burleigh Manor Middle and Ellicott Mills Middle also demonstrating high levels of academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This used to be one of the top schools in Howard County, but the current administration has severely lowered the standards and expectations for academic achievement. It is more important (according to this administration) that the students "feel good" about themselves, so standards have been "adjusted" to make the report cards more pleasing. Many of the more experienced teachers have been leaving the school over the past 3-4 years. Expect the test scores to decline! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
