Atholton High

Summary:

Atholton High is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Columbia, Maryland, part of the highly-ranked Howard County Public Schools district. The school has seen a diverse student population in recent years, with a racial makeup that includes 29-35% White, 29-32% African American, 10-13% Hispanic, and 18-19% Asian students.

Academically, Atholton High has generally performed well compared to state and district averages, with 66.2% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts, versus 63% for the Howard County district and 48.4% for Maryland. However, the school lags behind in mathematics, with only 14.9% proficient or better, compared to 41.1% for the district and 24.1% for the state. Atholton High's statewide ranking has declined in recent years, dropping from 6th out of 185 Maryland high schools in 2012-2013 to 73rd out of 146 in 2023-2024, corresponding with a drop from a 5-star to a 3-star rating by SchoolDigger. The school's Asian students perform relatively well, ranking 11th out of 25 Maryland high schools in 2020-2021, but the overall performance suggests potential achievement gaps between student subgroups.

Compared to nearby schools in the Howard County district, Atholton High generally outperforms Long Reach High and Oakland Mills High in academic metrics, but lags behind higher-performing schools like Centennial High and River Hill High. The school's spending per student and student-teacher ratio have remained relatively consistent, suggesting that factors beyond funding and class size may be contributing to its academic performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Atholton 2021-2022 has had more than 10 fights involving students and parents. And it’s only been 1 month of school. This school also has a very bad drug problem. This used to be a really good school. Now the learning environment doesn’t feel safe at all. I do not recommend going here! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
