Aberdeen Middle

Summary:

Aberdeen Middle is a public middle school located in Aberdeen, Maryland, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 1,082 students. The school is part of the Harford County Public Schools district, which is ranked 9 out of 25 in Maryland and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Aberdeen Middle has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of African American (43.44%) and Hispanic (13.68%) students, the school consistently underperforms academically. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 6.9% of 6th-grade students at Aberdeen Middle were proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics, compared to 22.9% in the district and 19.8% statewide. The school's statewide ranking has also been declining, from 125 out of 315 Maryland middle schools in the 2014-2015 school year to 199 out of 328 in the 2023-2024 school year, placing it in the bottom half of Maryland middle schools with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Nearby schools, such as Fallston Middle, Bel Air Middle, and Southampton Middle, consistently outperform Aberdeen Middle in academic assessments and have higher statewide rankings.

The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Aberdeen Middle, ranging from 58.49% to 63.22% over the past three school years, suggests that socioeconomic factors may be contributing to the school's academic challenges. Additionally, the low performance of certain student subgroups, such as African American and Military Connected students, raises concerns about equity and the school's ability to provide equal educational opportunities for all students. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive approach that considers the school's unique demographic and socioeconomic factors, as well as targeted interventions to improve educational outcomes for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The faculty doesn't seem to care how well the kids do and will drop down to their (kids) level with snide remarks and comments which I believe to be totally unprofessional. I also dealt with a situation where we called to the school to discuss our child and one of the Asst. Principal's apparently had the discussion in open forum at the front office desk instead of returning to her office and possibly closing the door so other children could not hear the conversation. By the time my child returned to school the next day, other children were already aware of the conversation and my child was picked on. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
